Daruma Tavern: Amazing KL Hokkien Mee from a Bistro (TE4 Springleaf)

Another place found through Google Maps reviews, it was one of the options besides Friends Cafe HK 朋友冰室 during our visit to Springleaf. As expected, there was long queue in front of the Hong Kong Restaurant despite a rainy day. We immediately switched to Daruma Tavern which is just one street across.
The Bistro sells a variety food of Local, Western, Japanese, Thai, and Bar Snacks (such a talented chef!). Thanks to the overwhelming reviews, it was not difficult to decide on what to have.
We were very impressed by the thick Wok hey smell from their KL Dai Lok Mee ($7.9++). The KL Hokkien Mee totally blew us away with its smoky char wok hey aroma and punchy sweetness. No exaggeration, probably one of the best I’ve ever had.
The Hougang Six Miles Stone Fried Hokkien Mee ($7.9++) was equally shiok. I think it was from one of the closed hawker stalls as we learnt from Google. It’s the very wet kind, topped generously with fresh crispy pork lard and full of oomph. Both dishes are totally worth the calories and must try. We were a bit disappointed by the fact it was not really served in a claypot as shown in the menu though.
One thing to be mentioned is that there is service charge despite not much service (even the order and payment was through QR code). Overall the pricing is still reasonable considering the dish ingredients and dine-in atmosphere.

  1. I'm trying to assess the authenticity. Has the writer tried the real KL Hokkien mee before? There are many places that claims to do it in Singapore but it's far from it.
