Path Restaurant @ MBFC Tower 3 : CBD Set Lunches from $45++

Path is a contemporary Asian restaurant that opened this year in Marina Bay Financial District. It's led by executive chef Marvas Ng in partnership with 1855 F&B concepts. The food is described as "East Asian Flavors, elevated with French Finesse" but my lunch experience spoke a different picture.
Needless to say, we went straight for the set lunches, picking a 2 course set ($45+) and a 3 course set ($55+) to share. The main difference is the additional dessert and the liberty to choose your appetizer (btw chef curated, hot and cold) in the 3 course set. It's a creamy aerated silken potato with a raw surprise of an Onsen egg. The shredded duck leg with teriyaki sauce at the bottom was slightly salty.
For the 2 course set, the default appetizer was the chef curated appetizer which changes according to the chef. We had a mesclun salad with some sour cream dressing and ikura, a far cry in terms of the sophistication level and flavor satisfaction when we compared to the hot appetizer from the 3 course set. The latter was a duck rillete that looked like chawanmushi but was nothing of those sorts.
Luckily the food improved as we moved to the mains. The Shanghai yakisoba was good, reminding me of a Sakura ebi pasta. So was the pork rack that was impecabbly tender. However, the flavors still leaned towards the West rather than the East. Not much surprises or creativity either.
That said, the dessert we had might be as classic as they sound - Okinawan Brown Sugar Madeleines. But it's one of the best Madeleines I've had, though the tahitian vanilla with rum candied kumquats seemed like separate entities on their own.
Perhaps my expectations were set too high by the raving social media reviews of this place. Food is decent but wasn't as unique as I thought it would be. The two dishes from the set lunches I thought stood this place out from the rest were the Duck Rillette and dessert. This is also the reason why I would recommend the 3-course set over the 2-course set. The place was fully packed during weekday lunch hours and it can be quite noisy like a marketplace. But if that's not a huge concern for you, then the lunch deal is worth checking out.
